Archbishop

Archbishop
Literally "chief bishop" in Greek. The title first referred to metropolitans (q.v.) of great importance, e.g., those of Rome and Alexandria (qq.v.). From the fifth century the title was given to the five patriarchs (q.v.). It also came to apply to the heads of autocephalous (q.v.) churches, e.g., to the patriarch of the church of Cyprus (q.v.).
